Specific Information and Equipment Recommendations
The CE Miller Ranch we will be holding the school on is located at the base of the Sierra Vieja Mountains. We have facilities for classroom time and plenty of room for the ranges and shooting activities we have planned. You will have the opportunity to test your firearms’ capability and your capability. You will learn your limitations. You will gain tremendous confidence as you progress through the school. You will be taught new techniques you probably haven’t seen or tried before. You will be treated like family and friends, and we hope to be counted among your friends when you leave.
Accomodations
If students do not want to stay in the 1918-era military post, they can arrange hotel accommodations in the Marfa (Paisano Hotel 432-729-3669), Fort Davis (Limpia Hotel 432-426-3237),or Van Horn (El Capitan Hotel 877-283-1220) or bring self-contained trailers to the ranch. Each town is a little more than an hour from the ranch.
Class Start Time
Class will start Friday morning, April 3rd at 8:30 am.
Meals
The ranch will provide all meals each day if desired. Bill and Jill Miller are very capable dutch oven cooks who have provided food for private parties, weddings, trail rides, cattle round ups and horse clinics. Please let Jill know of any food allergies or dietary constraints by March 25th as they will do the grocery shopping in El Paso. (jdmiller2@mac.com )
Bring snacks and drinks that you might desire while on the range and in camp.
Equipment
- Hunting rifle -recommended action bedded and barrel free floated. Please bring the rifle you will be hunting with. We recommend calibers of 300 or smaller as larger calibers have left prior students sore and flinching after firing so many rounds. You can adapt the information you will learn to any rifle you have. We have proven over the years that most over-the-counter hunting rifles with a bedded action, free floated barrel and good trigger job, will shoot accurately at extended distances. You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars to have a great hunting rifle.
- Scope – make sure you have enough elevation adjustment to shoot at extended ranges.
- Ammo – 120 rounds / Sling / bi-pod / shooting sticks
- Hearing Protection / shooting mat / ground cloth / day pack
- Binoculars / spotting scope
- Rain gear / hiking boots /
- Cleaning equipment
- Camera
- If staying at the ranch, you will also need: an air bed or folding cot, sleeping bag and towels.
Location & Directions
We will send registered students directions to the ranch before the school.
The ranch is located 10 miles west of Valentine, Texas.
